What is the purpose of vitamin C in skincare?!
You might know that vitamin C is great to take when you’re feeling under the weather, but it’s also awesome for your skin. So, why do you want vitamin C in your skincare routine? It has many benefits such as collagen production, reduces dark spots and uneven skin tone, reduces redness and inflammation, and protects against sun damage. Basically, using a vitamin C serum regularly can make your skin look brighter, firmer, and more even.
One of my favorite perks of Vitamin C is its role in protecting your skin from sun damage. Besides making your skin look great, it can actually help lower the risk of melanoma (skin cancer) by inhibiting melanin production. Melanin is what gives your skin its color and can also lead to dark spots. When your skin is exposed to the sun, it tries to protect itself by making more melanin, which can sometimes become cancerous. Vitamin C helps reduce the amount of melanin being produced, making it a valuable ingredient in your skincare.
The vitamin C you take as a supplement is different from what’s in your skincare products. When choosing a vitamin C serum you want to make sure to get a high quality one with a stable form. If it is not in a stable form, they will become inactive when they are oxidized. At Glow, we carry DermaQuest Skincare, which uses a stable, oil-soluble form of vitamin C called BV-OSC, or Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate.
I hope this was helpful to understand more of the “science” behind vitamin C. I think it is valuable to know the formulation, ingredients and reasoning behind what is in the products I carry at Glow. I wanted to share a bit about why vitamin C is such a fantastic addition to your skincare routine. Next time you’re at the spa, let me know if you want to try a vitamin C product, I’d be happy to help you find the perfect one for you!
